President Recep Tayyip Erdogan believes that the European Union has made a grave mistake in punishing Turkish Cypriots, and time will prove this. He insists on the recognition of their equal sovereignty and status in order to achieve a fair and lasting solution.

What was Erdogan’s stance on the EU’s treatment of Turkish Cypriots?

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan contended that time would show the European Union’s mistake in penalizing Turkish Cypriots. He stressed that the EU broke its promises and underserved the Turkish Cypriots. Erdogan calls for recognition of their equal sovereignty and status, which he sees as crucial for achieving a fair and permanent solution.

Erdogan’s Bold Claim on EU’s Decision

Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the President of Turkey, recently made a striking statement, asserting that the future will reveal the European Union’s significant error in imposing penalties on the Turkish Cypriots. Erdogan articulated this position shortly after a cabinet assembly, expressing his conviction that the EU failed to keep its commitments.

According to Erdogan, the Turkish Cypriots have been treated unjustly, yet they remain resolute in their quest for an equitable and lasting solution. He emphasized the necessity for acknowledging the Turkish Cypriots’ equal sovereignty and international standing—a sentiment he believes is essential for progress.

Celebrating Four Decades of Northern Cyprus

In his address, Erdogan also took the opportunity to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Northern Cyprus’s declaration of independence, which occurred on November 15. He paid homage to influential figures like Dr. Fazil Kucuk and the first President Rauf Raif Denktash, acknowledging their contributions to the cause of Cyprus.

Moreover, Erdogan highlighted the enduring and strengthening relationship between Turkey and Northern Cyprus, elaborating on the advancements made in various domains, including energy, security, defense, and infrastructure. These efforts, he noted, are integral in fortifying the economic, commercial, and cultural bonds between the “motherland” and the “baby homeland.”

Fidan’s Stance on Cyprus Negotiations

Echoing Erdogan’s views, Hakan Fidan, the Foreign Minister of Turkey, also shared his insights on the Cyprus issue. Addressing the Turkish Parliament’s budget committee, Fidan declared that for a just, enduring, and viable solution, the inherent rights of the Turkish Cypriot people must be validated, along with their sovereign equality and international status.

Fidan was clear in his assertion that any forthcoming negotiations should occur between two states rather than two communities. Prior to any discussions, he argues, the status of both parties must be equalized to ensure a fair negotiating platform.
