The Mind REset program is an educational environmental initiative by Lidl Cyprus, aimed at cultivating environmental awareness among young Cypriots. Supported by Junior Achievement Cyprus and the education ministry, it engages students in green entrepreneurship and sustainability through a three-phase approach, including training, a trade fair, and an award ceremony. Over 9,000 students have participated, learning about reducing plastic usage and promoting closed material cycles.

Cultivating Environmental Awareness

The Mind REset educational environmental programme has been making strides since its inception three years ago. Under the guidance of Junior Achievement Cyprus and supported by Lidl Cyprus, the initiative operates with the endorsement of the Republic’s education ministry. It has successfully cemented itself as an institution that plays a critical role in shaping the environmental consciousness of young Cypriots.

With a touch of pride, we reflect on the program’s trajectory since it kicked off in 2021. The engagement has been nothing short of outstanding. A whopping figure of more than 9,000 children from 140 schools, comprising 94 primary and 46 high schools, have actively engaged in the Mind REset program. Designed to be both educational and entertaining, the program is composed of five lessons that align with the five fields of action established by the REset Plastic strategy of the Schwarz group, which Lidl Cyprus is also a part of.

The Three-Phase Approach

The Mind REset programme unfolds through a three-phase process that ensures comprehensive learning and practical application. Initially, it offers teacher and student trainings to lay the groundwork for understanding and action. Following this, participants get the opportunity to bring their ideas to life at the Trade Fair, where ten finalists are chosen for their innovation and commitment to environmental sustainability. Culminating in the Award Ceremony, the programme recognizes the two most outstanding “mind REsetters of the year” for their exceptional projects and ideas.

The initiative’s curriculum is carefully crafted to introduce students to the concept of green entrepreneurship. It equips them with the necessary skills to contribute significantly to environmental protection. The programme has also been a launchpad for students to present business ideas that are judged on presentation quality, exhibit design, and stage presence. These ideas are deeply influenced by the principles of the REset Plastic strategy, which revolves around reducing plastic usage and advocating for closed material cycles.

Engaging the Youth of Cyprus

The academic year 2023-24 witnessed a surge in participation, with 3,063 students from a mix of 68 primary and secondary schools across Cyprus, guided by 154 dedicated teachers. The highlight of the year was the Final Competition, showcasing the innovative spirit of Cyprus’s youth. The competition was a testament to the creativity and environmental commitment of the participants, notably the EGGSclusive team from Engomi High School and the PLANt Be team from Stavros Primary School. These teams, guided by the vision to reduce plastic usage, stood out among the ten finalists with their inventive proposals.

The EGGSclusive team proposed a creative use of eggshells, turning them into products for bleaching, cleaning, and exfoliation. On the other hand, the PLANt Be team crafted utility objects from pine needles and flour glue, displaying a remarkable fusion of practicality and sustainability.
