“Explore Cyprus: Beyond the City” is a photography exhibition showcasing the diverse heritage of Cyprus’s rural communities. Presented by UCLan Cyprus, it features 354 photographs, each depicting a unique village. The exhibition, located at Lefkara Conference Centre, aims to promote Cypriot countryside culture to local and international audiences.

The Exhibition at Lefkara

This month, the quaint village of Lefkara became the focal point of cultural appreciation with the unveiling of a significant photography exhibition. “Explore Cyprus: Beyond the City” is a project proudly presented by UCLan Cyprus, showcasing the diverse and rich tapestry of Cyprus’ rural communities.

The exhibition is a culmination of extensive travels by the Explore Cyprus team from the British University around both known and lesser-known villages. They have successfully captured images that narrate the unique identity of this Mediterranean gem. The project’s aim goes beyond mere documentation; it strives to put a spotlight on the Cypriot countryside and its heritage, promoting it to both domestic and international audiences through the lens of photography.

A Picture for Every Village

An astounding collection of 354 photographs is at the heart of this exhibition, each representing a different village or community from the 354 unique locations visited by the team. The Lefkara Conference Centre will host these snapshots of life until March 31, 2024. However, the exhibition is not confined to one place. Plans are underway for the collection to tour across Cyprus and even venture overseas, offering a window into Cypriot life beyond its bustling cities.

The Grand Opening

Though the doors of the exhibition are already open to the public, the grand inauguration is set for this Sunday at 3pm. This celebration of culture and artistry will take place under the significant patronage of Deputy Minister of Tourism, Kostas Koumis, marking a prestigious moment for the community and the creators alike.

The Creative Minds

The academic community and students of UCLan Cyprus, driven by their passion for photography and cultural preservation, have been the backbone of this endeavor. The project is led by Dr. Christos Karpasitis, an Assistant Professor in Digital Media and the Academic Leader of the BSc Web Design & Development program at UCLan Cyprus. Dr. Lambros Ioannou, a lecturer within the program, has lent his design expertise to enhance the project’s reach and impact.

The Journey and the Photographers

The exploration and documentation were not just a mission but a transformative journey for a dedicated team of creatives. Aimilios Sotiriou, Sotiria Kirlappou, Rafaella Spyrou, and Loizos Chrysanthou—all students at UCLan Cyprus—embarked on this adventure, visiting over 350 villages. They not only sought to freeze moments in time through their cameras but also to refine their skills in photography and editing, contributing to the project’s success.
