The trial on Cyprus’ ‘golden passports’ scheme was delayed due to the absence of a judge at the Nicosia criminal court. This unexpected delay came as the court was about to finalize the charge sheet for the four defendants implicated in the corruption scandal exposed by an Al Jazeera documentary.
On International AntiCorruption Day, the Cyprus parliament addressed the significant threat of corruption to democracy, emphasizing the need for transparency, accountability, and integrity in public institutions. They called for the protection of whistleblowers, the promotion of open data and freedom of information laws, and international collaborations to combat corruption and uphold the values of democracy.
The 2024 budget for anticorruption efforts is €2.102 million, with €1.2 million dedicated to examining a large number of complaints. The authority plans to investigate 107 complaints, hiring external and international experts for specialized cases.
