Welcome shade for Nicosia pedestrians

Tent fabric coverings are being installed this week to provide shade for pedestrians during the hot summer months along Nicosia’s Ledra and Onasagorou streets.

“This campaign has already started today,” Makis Nicolaides from the Nicosia municipality said on Wednesday.

“We are working every day from Monday to Saturday this week, from 4 to 7 in the morning. Tents will be going up every day and the work will continue next week.”

He explained that the unusual working hours were chosen to minimise inconvenience. The municipality has based the design of the tent coverings on last year’s pilot study at the entrance of Ledra street. Nicolaides said that the pilot study has resolved many problems and the project is now well designed as a result.

The intention is to cover Ledra and Onasagorou streets by September and eventually to incorporate the side streets in between. Although mainly intended for the summer, this will be a permanent feature of the area.

As the tents are secured by attaching them to the buildings on both sides of the street, the progress partly depends on the consent of the owners of those buildings.
