Turkish and Greek Cypriots rewarded European Citizen 2015 prize

Ali Tuncay and Takis Hadjidemetriou, the respective Turkish and Greek Cypriot heads of the joint Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage are being awarded the European Citizen 2015 prize for their work in preserving the island’s cultural heritage, both Christian and Muslim, it was announced on Thursday.

The two men were chosen from a list of nominees submitted to the European Parliament. The prizes will be awarded to two winners at an event organised by the Office EP in Cyprus in October, which will be followed by a gala event in Brussels for all the winners from all member countries.

Hadjidemetriou and Tuncay were proposed by AKEL MEPs Takis Hadjigeorgiou and Neoclis Sylikiotis for their enormous contribution to the recording, preserving and restoring the island’s cultural heritage across the divide, in addition to advancing the idea of peaceful cooperation and setting an example for the youth of both communities on the island, the announcement said.
