The Ottoman cemetery you should not miss

Many think we have passed without noticing it, the old burial ground in the middle of Kyrenia. What many believe to be a park to take a shortcut through on the way to the main shopping street is actually an old Ottoman cemetery. Sure, it may seem sad that the historic site lies there quietly while people walk by without noticing it, while it’s fascinating that this ancient place managed to blend into the modern cityscape in such a natural way that it becomes self-evident.

As the name states, The Ottoman Baldoken Cemetery has been here since the Ottomans conquered Cyprus in 1571. The place which is just a stone’s throw from Kyrenia castle became a burial place for soldiers and continued to be so until the 1600s. The cemetery was renovated in 1995.

So next time you walk through Kyrenia remember to look out for the Ottoman cemetery!
