Sweet Bird of Youth

Fans of the American theatre will be pleased to know the Cyprus Theatre Organisation (THOC) will present performances of Tennessee Williams’ Sweet Bird of Youth at the theatre’s new building in south Nicosia as of Saturday for three months.

Well-known as one of the foremost playwrights of 20th-century American drama, Williams’ plays have been enjoyed by audiences all over the world on the stage as well as on the big screen.
Between 1948 and 1959 seven of his plays were performed on Broadway, including Sweet Bird of Youth, which was also made into a feature film in 1962 and made for television in 1989.
The plays by the man from Mississippi never get old because they tell well-rounded emotional stories. They don’t make things look pretty and often concentrate on minorities in society that are often overlooked or who live on the outskirts of what is seen to be politically correct.

The performance has been adapted and directed by Angela Brouskou. Some of the actors involved are Petros Georgkatsis, Achilleas Grammatikopoulos, Vasiliki Dialina, Demetris Constantinidis and Filippos Constantinos.

Performances on April 23 and May 6 will be accompanied by English and Turkish subtitles. Performances will also be given in Limassol on May 19 and in Larnaca on May 20.
