The Cyprus Food and Nutrition Museum and the Photography and Cinematography Club of Engomi cordially invite the public to the opening of the photography exhibition “Street Food: Depicting the Cypriot Food Culture”, on 23 March 2016 at 6.30pm in the exhibition hall of the Goethe-Institut Cyprus in Nicosia, an event especially dedicated to street food in Cyprus and organized in cooperation with Goethe-Institut Cyprus in Nicosia.
The exhibition aspires to present the audience with a panorama of the Cypriot food culture, related to eating and drinking outdoors. An important number of photographs was assembled from various archival collections, and documents the historical dimension of “street food” as an evolving cultural phenomenon on the island from the beginning of the British rule (1878) and throughout the 20th century. A second group of photographs resulted from a photo contest held in the framework of the project, and highlights contemporary aspects of “street food” in Cyprus.
The opening event aims to highlight different perspectives on “street food” as a cultural phenomenon, as well as to effectively engage the audience’s senses and intellect by providing interesting historical information, multiple visual stimuli, and of course the authentic tastes of the street.
In the framework of the exhibition the Goethe-Institut Cyprus will present the documentary “Taste the Waste” (Director: Valentin Thurn, colour, 92 min., 2010) in the exhibition hall of the Goethe-Institut on 24 March 2016 at 7.30pm.
