Movember at Korineum Golf Club

Movember is fast approaching. The month formerly known as November is now a time of year when men grow their moustaches to highlight and create awareness around diseases such as prostate and testicular cancer and mental health problems in men.

This year Korineum Golf Club will promote Movember awareness by organizing a charity event on Friday, 21st November.

We met Geoff Turner, who is the initiator of the competition.

– Last year we were a group of friends, known as Mo Bros, who took part in Movember. We grew moustaches and collected money, said Geoff. This year, we will take it further by combining it with a golf tournament.

Besides a prize for the winner of the golf tournament, there will also be awarded a prize for best moustache. GM Plastics and McKenzie Guest House are our sponsors.

– We want to raise money to support cancer research, but most importantly the aim is to create a dialogue around men’s health. Many men today do not talk openly about how they feel.

Movember started a few years ago in Australia. Today The Movember Foundation is a leading global organization that has so far raised over 559 million U.S. dollars.

On the organization’s UK website you can read:

“Movember is about giving the moustache a comeback, to have fun and make a difference. Mo Bros around the world are committed to growing a moustache for 30 days in November and will be living billboards for Movember. The moustache is our logo, the symbol that leads to conversations, awareness and fundraising for the benefit of men’s health.”

The rules for participating in Movember are simple. On 31st October have a clean shave then simply allow the moustache to grow for the entire month. No beard, no fake moustaches, only a real moustache that can’t be shaved, only trimmed.

The aim is to use the moustache to draw attention and to create conversations about men’s health. Just like when you participate in a race for charity, Movember is the perfect opportunity to ask friends and family to sponsor the initiative to raise funds for research.

Movember is obviously not only for Mo Bros, Mo Sisters also participate by collecting money and have dialogues about men’s health. They are a very important part of Movember.

There is only a month left until the Movember and Geoff is really looking forward to organize the golf tournament.

– It is a competition where everyone is welcome to attend and you can already sign up.

The golf tournament will take place on 21st November but the whole month will be devoted to Movember at Korineum. And at the end of the month there will be a celebration to mark the end.
