Cyprus Active offers a range of activities for those who want to explore North Cyprus. Paddle boarding, kayaking, sailing, mountain walks and bike hire. New Cyprus Magazine took a tour with Cyprus Active on a full-day Jeep Safari with a guide, which proved to be a great experience.
At 9 o’clock in the morning our guide James picked us up with his big jeep. Then began the bumpy ride up the mountain, halfway up we stopped to enjoy the views of Lapta, Alsancak and Kyrenia. James told us what we could expect from the day’s tour. We travelled up on the small roads that wind around the cloud clad peaks, viewing the amazing scenery and views. We then stopped for lunch in Lapta before continuing down towards the drier landscape around Karsiyaka. We were a mix of Swedes and Brits on the tour. We all laugh when James jokingly calls us to look out for bears and lions disguised as mountain goats.
After the introduction, we continued further up the mountain peaks. Asphalt has long since turned into uneven dirt roads with big potholes on our way to the second stop, an abandoned village where only ruins testify that people once resided. Today, only the shepherds with their mountain goats remain there. James tells us what the lives of people used to look like, how the children in the village early in the morning used to go down to the city to go to school.
We enjoy the cool temperature up here, a haven for as long as the hot summer keeps a firm grip on Kyrenia. Once again, we stop to admire the stunning views. From up here, high above the ground, you get the feeling of being able to reach out with your eyes to all the island’s shores.
After a nice lunch in Lapta consisting of traditional Cypriot cuisine, we take the jeep on to Karsiyaka. Even there, the roads are so diverse that you need a jeep to navigate them. The arid landscape reflects beautifully the golden glow of the afternoon sun which started to disappear behind the mountain peaks.
Jeep tour with Cyprus Active is an incredibly fun and informative experience. Our highly professional guide James was extremely knowledgeable and had great empathy when he told us about Cyprus and its long history.
