Historical Mekhan is filled with authentic charm

The historical Mekhan was once upon time, just like his larger neighbour Büyük Han, an Ottoman world house built around a courtyard inside the walls of the capital Nicosia. Long-distance travellers came here to stay overnight. Mekhan still attracts many tourists but today as a cafe, restaurant and as a venue for performances and entertainment.

The courtyard is filled with authentic charm from far back in time. Under the big white parasols, the tables are packed with visitors who have stayed for a cup of coffee and something to eat. Mekhan is a perfect stop for tourists on sightseeing in the old town, from here it is walking distance to all major sights, such as the Selimiye Mosque and Büyük Han. It is also very close to shopping or the border crossing to southern Nicosia.

Historical Mekhan has plenty of events

Mekhan’s restaurant has a wide menu of Turkish Cypriot food, including Turkish breakfast with halloumi, sausage, olives, bread, eggs and vegetables. In addition to the restaurant there are several small art galleries and shops selling traditional local crafts and souvenirs. On weekends and evenings, concerts with classical music, Latin dance nights and other cultural events are organized.
