The head of the Turkish Cypriot office of public works and transportation, Kemal Durust, announced on Thursday that North Cyprus is to have a third GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) operator.
Durust was speaking to reporters after a meeting he had with representatives of the existing two GSM operators, Turkcell and TelSim. Durust said that the visit aimed at exchanging views on the scientific developments in the field of telecommunications.
He also announced that works for the implementation of new 4.5G network – which is capable of 1.03Gbps of maximum theoretical download speeds – have been completed and soon they will open up the process of tenders.
“The transition to the 4.5G network will provide Turkish Cypriots with better quality and faster communication,” continued Durust. “We are ready to accept tenders from any company regardless of which country it is situated in.”
