Girne’s new fully-covered Wednesday market is set for completion by August 5, it has been reveled.
Construction of the “new and modern aspect to the town”, which began in March, was originally scheduled to be finished by the end of this month but was postponed due to holidays.
The 1.3 million TL steel-framed market site of 3,750m2 aims to benefit stallholders and their customers with a capacity of 180 stalls under one roof and space for 430 cars, said project architect Ali Yapıcıoğlu.
“Since the end of March we have been working to create a contemporary site for our town and are successfully managing that,” he said.
“On behalf of the municipality and Canilkan Construction, I would like to say a great job has been done as all the steel, arches and ventilation have been put in place, leaving only the roofing which will be erected after the Bayram holiday.”
Mr Yapıcıoğlu said a high-rise roof for the market has been built to protect shoppers from the elements while allowing in maximum light. He added: “Buses will also have access to the market due to the high roof and the area will be used for other events as well. It will be a great venue for dog shows, concerts or art and cultural events.”
