Girne Port

Girne port is one of the three ports built into the fortifications around Nicosia to protect the town during the Venetian era. It was named “The Del Proveditore Gate” after the famous Venetian architect Proveditore Francesco Barbaro. The port was renovated by the Ottomans in 1821 which is when the domed room on top was added. The port is currently open to the general public as a tourism office. You see it in the middle of the road when you go within the walls of the old town of Nicosia. There are also maps of the area within the walls, because it’s not always easy to find your way among the winding streets!
