Freshly baked bread at Food Lodge

The Food Lodge Artisan Bakery & Bistro is run and owned by Sonja and Latifa. It is located diagonally across the street from Tempo supermarket on Besparmaklar Caddesi, Catalkoy. The bakery, which opened in March 2013, is a popular meeting place for people coming to have breakfast, buy some freshly baked bread or to attend any of the events organized here in the evenings.

Sonja who is from Germany says that the bakery stands out from other bakeries on the Island because here they bake bread with great care and using the finest ingredients. While many places use mass produced, ready-made bread dough to bake, at the Food Lodge it is made from scratch using traditional techniques and natural ingredients.

Food Lodge is the only bakery on the island that makes sourdough bread, which they sell a lot of, especially to the locals.  They also bake whole wheat bread, German rye bread, baguettes, rustic walnut bread, ciabatta and many more…

Here you can also buy freshly baked treats like delicious carrot cake, real fresh cream donuts and scones. For birthdays the children have lot of delightful cakes to choose from. You can also order a custom photo cake with any desired image on the surface of the cake.

The Food Lodge has a bistro with seating inside and out. Here you can enjoy a great breakfast, light lunches, sandwiches, soups and German sausage with curry sauce, the famous “Currywurst”.

There is no doubt that the Food Lodge is a popular place. While we were there, customers didn’t stop coming in to buy the freshly baked goods. Sonja was running back and forth serving customers while smiling and telling us about the bakery’s range.

The Food Lodge also offers gluten-free bread and if required a delivery and catering service is available too. They also collaborate with other food and retail outlets on the island, supplying bread to small shops or cafés. On Saturdays they have their own stall at Lambousa market in Lapta.

On Thursdays evenings, it’s movie night at the Food Lodge. Film classics like Grease and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest are shown from 20:00 on a big screen outdoors. A recurring and often well-attended event is the Moroccan evening with traditional Moroccan cuisine and belly dance performance’s.

Truly a very cosy place with a great sense of community.
