The Green Party in south Cyprus welcomes the decision by Yeroskipou municipality to offer 3,500 tote bags free of charge in an effort to reduce the use of plastic bags.
In a written statement, the district committee of the Green Party in Paphos said that the use of plastic bags is a main source of pollution in Cyprus.
The party said that they have been pushing for legislation to reduce plastic bag usage since 2003, adding that they many times had distributed bags made of clothing material to the public.
The Green Party is recommending that Yeroskipou’s free tote bags be coupled with a public campaign to inform the public about the negative impact of using plastic bags.
The Greens, who hope that more municipalities will follow Yeroskipou’s example, also offer to participate in the campaign with the collaboration of Environment Commissioner, and Green herself, Ioanna Panayiotou.
This is something that north Cyprus should implement as well. Hopefully we will see equal measures taken in the near future. Which will be the first municipality to hand out tote bags?
