Most are probably familiar with Baking soda as a baking agent but the truth is it has been used for a long time for much more than that. Bicarbonate soda can be used e.g. home-made beauty products, toothpaste and home remedies. Using baking soda is easy, inexpensive and nontoxic.
So I will share with you some tips that I have gathered.
Bicarbonate is said to have certain cancer-fighting abilities by making your body alkaline, which means that those nasty cells cannot thrive. The body is better regardless of whether one is slightly alkaline than acidic, and there is a lot of research about this.
I start most days with a large glass of water, squeezed in half a lemon and then mixed in a half teaspoon of baking soda.
I make my toothpaste from coconut oil, baking soda and mint. My teeth and mouth feel very good and I have noticed that my stomach is also feeling better. Not as much oxygen attacks the teeth and they look whiter. I use eco-labelled virgin coconut oil, all you need is a couple of tablespoons of oil and mix with baking soda until you have a paste (not too hard not too loose). Then mix in some chopped mint, it’s also fine to sprinkle in dried mint too, for flavour.
Against sweat and odour
Bicarbonate is really good as an alternative, non-toxic deodorant. Bicarbonate also prevents sweating and body odour, the only thing you need to do is rub a small amount under your arms. A little warning is that for the first few days can sweat more, and even smell, then your body releases all the toxins. Regular deodorants contain substances that clog the pores in your armpits and “lock in” the sweat, bicarbonate soda doesn’t. The bicarbonate neutralizes the body emissions instead and thereby takes away the unpleasant smell.
It is very effective to use baking soda in your hair. You’ll be surprised how good your hair feels after a treatment. You simply pour in a small amount of baking soda in the shampoo and then wash as usual.
The effect is that the bicarbonate cleans out your hair and neutralizes its pH value for all products and chemical contaminants that are exposed to daily. The bicarbonate gives the hair a chance to start from scratch so to speak. It also becomes smoother, which is an advantage if you have wild hair like me.
Teeth Whitening for home use
The easiest, cheapest and gentlest whitening available, follow the instructions below.
A tablespoon of baking soda, five drops of hydrogen peroxide and a few drops of water, spread out over the teeth with toothbrush, let sit for a little while and brush, rinse thoroughly.
If you want to make the teeth whiter mix the soda and hydrogen peroxide in a small container and mix until it becomes a smooth paste, add water if necessary. Then apply the solution to the teeth and let it sit for five minutes before rinsing thoroughly with water. To get more consistent results, this should be repeated once a week.
Do your cuticles look like they have been exposed to something really, really awful?
If so, you can help with a mixture of warm water and baking soda to create a paste that you then rub on your cuticles. The result is beautiful, soft and well groomed cuticles.
Facial peeling which also helps against dry hands
The same paste you mixed for your cuticles, you can also use for your hands and face.
Rub the paste on your face, and all the dead skin cells and “dirt” disappears. You get an amazing glow and it is completely free of expensive and harmful chemicals. Do not forget to rinse off the paste with water and pat the skin dry.
For your hands, do the same, rubbing and massaging. They become really soft and fine afterwards.
You can even pour baking soda in the bath tub and you will get the same smooth feeling all over your body.
Blackheads are an aberration but easy to deal with using bicarbonate soda and easy to make yourself: use a teaspoon of baking soda mixed in a cup of water, clean the skin first, then boil the mixture and the hold your face over the steam with a towel as vapour shield.
This home mixture is almost identical to that which the experts in the field use, but at a completely different price and plus you know exactly what the mixture contains.
As a dry shampoo
Sometimes you have no time or the desire to wash your hair when you’re rushing to go somewhere, so it might be good to use a dry alternative to get your hair clean quickly and without having to blow dry.
It is so simple that all you have to do is sprinkle a small amount of baking soda onto your scalp, then make sure you spread it evenly with your fingers, comb and style. It feels amazingly fresh, much better than the dry shampoo you buy at the store, I think.
A traditional housewife cure for coughs: A half teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water can cure a tough and persistent cough, improve oxygen uptake and widen your blood vessels so that the circulation to the skin and muscles increases.
Have a glass of water with half a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda to prevent acid reflux.
Sprinkle baking soda in smelly shoes, let stand until the next time you use them. Shake out the bicarbonate soda residue and then use the shoes as usual. All odours will be gone and the feet will feel good and fresh too. No more smelly feet…
Do not take baking soda directly before or after a large meal and not to take more than the recommended amount. Too much bicarbonate soda taken orally buffers the blood and too much can raise your blood pressure.
You can use baking soda on other areas as well, something we will go through at another time.
