Abbey to host Turksoy opera

An annual musical treat comes to Bellapais Abbey this week, with the 18th staging of the Türksoy Opera Days.

Ten singers from the Turkic world – including the TRNC’s own Beste Berk – will take to the stage for two performances, on Thursday and Friday.

The Opera Days feature a range of voices from across the Turkish world, including Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tatarstan, Mongolia, China, Turkmenistan and Turkey.

The Ankara-based Türksoy organisation – the International Culture Association – spans 14 countries and aims to preserve and showcase Turkic culture through literary, music, art and dance events.

Each year’s opera performance is dedicated to an artiste, and this year’s will take place in the memory of veteran Kyrgyz musician Bulat Menzhilkiev, who spent his life studying and teaching music.

The concerts start at 8pm, with doors opening at 7.30pm, and are free of charge.
