Deirdre Guthrie celebrated her silver anniversary with an art exhibition at her home in Bellapais a few days ago. This particular lady has managed to achieve a lot in her life, she has, among other things danced flamenco in Madrid under the name Candela Flores.
She has also had the honour to have met Lawrens Durrell, the author of the famous book “Bitter Lemons” (who has his house not far from Deirdre). Her parents moved to Bellapais in 1952 from Kuwait, and now she runs a small restaurant for guests who manage to find it. Irini is the name of restaurant where you have to pre-order your meals. She also has a house that is available for short-term lets.
By coincidence and pure chance, as it so often is here in North Cyprus, I met this lady three years ago when I was walking high up in the narrow alleys of Bellapais. I was looking for a unique and special restaurant to have lunch with my hiking guests.
Since then I always come back to her cosy and secluded oasis. She prepares all the food and also makes homemade lemonade for the guests’ delight.
We were probably around 100 people celebrating the silver jubilee which lasted all day and night. The party was very nice and I met many people who I have not seen in ages.
